About Sodwana Bay National Park

Sodwana Bay National Park, located on South Africa's northeastern coast within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site, is a vital marine and coastal conservation area. The park spans sandy beaches, extensive coral reefs, and dune systems along the Indian Ocean, creating diverse marine habitats that sustain rich biodiversity. Its coral reefs are among the southernmost tropical reefs in the world, hosting over 1,200 fish species, sea turtles, whale sharks, dolphins, and dolphins. Established in 1987 primarily to protect the marine environment, Sodwana Bay also supports sustainable recreational activities, especially scuba diving and snorkeling, which attract enthusiasts globally. Besides underwater adventures, the park offers beach camping, fishing, and birdwatching opportunities. The park’s environment ranges from warm temperate to subtropical climates, supporting unique flora and fauna. Key landmarks include the giant coral reefs and underwater pinnacles that form spectacular dive sites such as the famous Two Mile Reef and Four Mile Reef. These reefs not only provide excellent habitats but also contribute to coastal protection against erosion. Visitors appreciate this area for its combination of ecological significance and adventure opportunities, making it a top destination for marine wildlife observation and coastal exploration in South Africa.
